The other day I was driving down the highway just thinking about life and I started noticing how obsessed with labels we are, as a human race. We’re obsessed with knowing where people “belong” or what class people fit into. SERIOUSLY THOUGH, you can look all the way back into history and see it through every time period.
In India they have the caste system, in Europe the people were separated by class, even back in the bible times people were secluded and excluded due to their labels.
Think about it, why the heck are we so obsessed with this? How does it make life better to exclude yourself from a particular type of person just because someone put them in certain category?! It really doesn’t, because when you segregate someone something deep inside you wants to treat them like they’re less than you, and that’s human nature. The thing is, there’s one type of person, human. We’re all screw-ups, in our cores we’re all fundamentally different than all other people except for the fact we’re all messed up in some way.
Did you ever fit perfectly into a clique in high school? Probably not. If you were popular, there’s a good chance you were a closet nerd or if you were all about the artsy stuff I bet you secretly loved hunting. Or you may not have been any of those things and people just thought you were weird and now you run a fortune 500 company. There is no way that any body fits perfectly into these perfectly curated label boxes.
In the Bible, there are multiple places where Jesus says “screw it” to labels. The woman at the well, Bartimaeus, like every single leper ever mentioned, the rich young ruler, all of his disciples, Paul, and I could keep going all day. The thing is, whether the label was good or bad Jesus saw people for who they truly are. In all honesty, Judah smith says it best, WE’RE ALL SINNERS and it boils down to the fact that “There are two kinds of sinners, Group 1 thinks they’re good and Group 2 knows they’re not.” That’s literally it. Nothing more.
“There are two kinds of sinners, Group 1 thinks they’re good and Group 2 knows they’re not.”
– Judah Smith, Jesus Is _____.
The cool part about that whole everybody being sinners’ thing is that God still loves us and will forgive EVERY SINGLE SINNER. He gives all of us countless opportunities, which a lot of the time we’re like the rich young ruler. We just pass it by because we don’t really want to have our labels taken away.
“21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.”
22 But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.”
See, Jesus was all like DUDE, throw off that label and come hang out with me, but he guy was actually super attached to his label and didn’t actually want to get rid of it.
Scan your heart for a couple of minutes and think about why you personally have a hard time with labels. Why is it hard for you?
The thing about getting rid of our labels and just realizing that we’re all messed up is we’ve got to get out of our comfort zone, which our label created. Seriously, those labels are like last seasons style anyway, nobody wants that! Rip up that perfectly compact box and just frolic through the fields with Jesus, I promise, ITS SO MUCH BETTER.
Well, let me just say that your labels don’t matter and that no matter what people have called you, YOU’RE AMAZING. Have a phenomenal week. I love you.
